Projects 2020

Twelve Restaurant Covid-19 Build

The family restaurant needed to quickly re-imagine how it would operate as they were hit with the global pandemic and new protocols being announced daily. We quickly got to work designing partitions and stations for the restaurant; I wanted to make sure we kept our carbon footprint low, minimise the use of plastics, support local business and use recycled products where possible.

The timber in this project is all recycled wood.

Office Desk Build

I realised the importance of having a work space, a place that you can walk away from and leave work to best maintain a work/life balance. For me, having an uncluttered desk means I have an uncluttered mind. Forthwith I took to designing and building a rack mount, studio mixing suite for the tkAudio side of things.

Box Trailer Production Suite

Commissioned by @B360 the specification was to design and build a Covid safe environment where a lighting designer and producer could work safely. Obviously the space needed to be aesthetically pleasing whilst capitalising on the limited space, but with the added restrictions that Covid-19 has brought, we needed a space that was functional and flexible.

Comfort Monitor Build

Commissioned by @BMEAV and designed for @RoyalCaribbean and @CelebrityXCruises the brief was to design comfort monitors that could be quickly wheeled on and off the stage, whilst also providing a storage solution so that the TVs don’t get damaged when not in use. With knowledge from my corporate AV background, we put together some designs and ideas, developed them and then built it. The splatter speaker paint gives a good yet robust finish to the product.

Card Table Build

This was a concept piece I put together; its first use is as an entertainment piece where friends can sit around the table and play cards together, this removes the need for excess chairs as everyone can sit on the floor or on cushions whilst sliding their cards across poker grade speed felt.

The second use is as a dinner table; after some research it is documented that eating in the Sukhasana position for at least one meal a day has numerous health benefits.

TV Stand

I was approached by a local neighbour who was looking for a TV stand which was in line with her modern house, however there was a ledge in the way which would have unnecessarily pushed a TV stand into the living room, encroaching on the space. My solution was to build a stand, that not only left the TV at a recommended ergonomical height, but used the environmental restraints to its advantage.

Veneered Oak Shelving Unit

I love designing projects with design constraints that need to be overcome. Computer aided design (CAD) is a great way to visualise the final product, but also see and work through any problems. I was asked to produce oak shelving for a vintage cabinet, which had significant sentimental value. My solution was to build free standing shelving unit which could be erected inside the cabinet without the need to drill in or use the existing structure to support any weight. The tricky bit was determining the position of the shelves based on the space I would need to manoeuvre them into place.

This was built using veneered MDF, which is a cost efficient product for providing a real wood finish, for a fraction of the price.

Half Rack Cubes

A project for @tkaudioservices; as a sound designer and engineer I often find myself travelling to jobs with various bits of half rack equipment. Setting them up in the same way every time, then packing them back up again and shoving them in the box in an attempt to achieve the fastest load out time to date.

Based around the Peli 1510 case, which is the largest piece of aircraft carry on that you are allowed, the rack cubes allow 10.5” width equipment with rack ears to be mounted, seamlessly used and then quickly and safely packed away.
